Dr Alexandra Wong has been invited to give a talk titled ‘Zhongshan in Sydney’s Chinatown’ for the History Week at Gordon Library on 8 September 2022. Her talk will focus on the historical and contemporary links between Zhongshan and Sydney’s Chinatown. See the abstract of her talk below:
In the conventional narrative, Sydney’s Chinatown in the early 20th century is conceived as a self-contained ethnic enclave for Chinese Australians who were victims of racial discrimination stemming from the White Australia Policy. However, the perspective of Chinese Australians has rarely been acknowledged in popular discourse on Chinatown’s history.
Alexandra Wong is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Culture and Society of Western Sydney University. This talk is based on Alexandra’s research with colleagues on two ARC-funded Projects: ‘The China Australia Heritage Corridor’ (2017-2021) and ‘Sydney’s Chinatown in the Asian Century’ (2012-2016).
Hear Alexandra talk about how interviews with members of these and other Zhongshan families with links to Chinatown have helped piece together information of local business and the social lives of those who lived, worked and whose home county was Zhongshan, China.
